Hi, I am Donna, the Youth Trainer for Yorkshire and the North east of England. As part of my role I work with Young Offending Institutes, Secure Children’s Homes and with Young Offending teams.
I have had some great success within a South Yorkshire Secure Childrens Home, where we recently held an award ceremony for 4 young men who worked really hard and completed our accredited Taking the Lead course and were all awarded an Open Award level 1 in Further Learning and Employment skills.
I have recently started the course with two young ladies in the same establishment but this has been a different challenge as one of the young ladies is profoundly deaf. At Dogs Trust we hold no barriers to disability and our workshops are available to all.
This particular young lady is dog mad and has been very keen to do the course. After several meetings with her support staff and sign interpreters, I have created new visual resources and scribed notes so that she can join in the group session. She has been coming on in leaps and bounds and I have no doubt that she will pass the course.
These experiences are incredibly rewarding for me, I have been able to research and understand deafness and how it has impacted this young lady, I have also picked up a surprising amount of sign language myself which is brilliant to know!
If you have any Young people with disability and wish to book Dogs Trust workshops, they are open to EVERYONE! Have a chat with your local ECO or Youth trainer and we will work with you to create the perfect workshop.
